ABOUT IDHS

The Institute for Defense and Homeland Security was established by and is operated by the Center for Innovative Technology (CIT), a state-chartered nonprofit corporation that accelerates next generation technology and technology companies.

IDHS Mission

To deliver world-class science and technology solutions in response to national defense and homeland security requirements through university, industry and federal research and development activities.


IDHS Goals

To become the national center of excellence for demonstration and transition of science and technology (S&T) solutions to meet national defense and homeland security needs:

  • To translate national defense and homeland security capability shortfalls into S&T requirements

Leadership

Hugh E. Montgomery, Jr. was named the IDHS's first director in July 2003. As IDHS director, Montgomery is the senior executive responsible for all aspects of IDHS operations and will serve as a member of the IDHS executive committee.

The Executive Committee of the Institute for Defense and Homeland Security is the advisory body responsible for the overall policy and direction. Eugene J. Huang, Virginia’s Secretary of Technology, and John O. Marsh, Jr., former Secretary of the Army, serve as co-chairs of the IDHS executive committee. Additional members of the panel include current and former federal officials from defense or homeland security agencies, Commonwealth of Virginia cabinet and university officials, and industry representatives from research- and technology-intensive companies in Virginia.
