What is IDHS?

    The Institute for Defense and Homeland Security (IDHS) is a consortium of university, industry and federal research and development partners dedicated to delivering world-class science and technology solutions in response to national defense and homeland security requirements.

What is the purpose of IDHS?

    IDHS conducts research, education, and technology transfer at member institutions and firms with an emphasis in the fields of telecommunications, biodefense, sensor systems, risk management crisis management and remote presence. Industry consortium members commercialize technology and develop solutions that support rapid deployment of advanced technology and new capabilities.

    Virginia's colleges and universities support a wide variety of research that will be integral to IDHS. These research centers include:

What technologies will IDHS focus on?

    Initially, IDHS will focus on telecommunications, biodefense, sensor systems, risk management, crisis management and remote presence. Examples of potential IDHS research include:

    • Multi-spectral, ad hoc, reconfigurable, secure wireless networks
    • High-sensitivity, harsh environment sensor arrays and networks for biodefense, chemical defense, border security and urban warfare
    • Biodefense / immunology – anti-viral, anti-toxin vaccines, genomics databases, GIS, screening tools
